How to Tell a Real Silk Scarf from a Fake One

There are fake silk scarves in the market, and consumers can be easily tricked into paying over the value of a silk scarf and thinking they're getting something of great value. However, it is not difficult to tell a real silk scarf from a fake silk scarf if you know what you are looking for. So how do you spot a fake and an original?

Price

Real silk scarves are much more expensive than fake silk scarves. This is the easiest way to tell the difference between real and fake silk scarves. The price is so high that you can be sure it's a real silk scarf.

Appearance

Real silk scarves are not as shiny as fake silk scarves. A real silk scarf will have a very dull sheen, while a fake silk scarf will be very shiny. This is due to the production process of fake silk scarves.

Real silk scarves are expensive, and the process of making real silk scarves is very time-consuming. On the other hand, fake silk scarves are made in assembly lines.

If you look closely at the material of a real silk scarf, you will see little bumps on the surface. It's fine if you see these bumps on a real silk scarf, but if you see a large number of bumps, it's likely a fake silk scarf.

Feel

Real silk scarves have a nice smooth, soft feel when you touch the silk. Fake silk scarves have a peculiar stiff, dry feel.

Normally, you won't find a silk scarf that is pure silk. It is usually mixed with some other fiber. For example, you will find silk/cotton scarves. Silk/polyester scarves are very common as well. Silk/wool scarves are also available, but these tend to be more expensive.

Know the Difference Between Satin & Silk

Satin and silk are similar-looking cloths, but they are made differently. One, satin is a type of silk, but silk is not necessarily satin. Second, satin is made by weaving silk threads, whereas silk is spun.

The best way to tell the difference between satin and silk is to rub it between your fingers. Satin will feel smooth, and silk will feel soft.

How to Test if Silk is Real

There are some tests that can help you determine if your silk scarf is real:

  • Soft-Press Test: Take a small piece of silk and rub it between your fingers. If the silk feels rough, it is not 100% silk.
  • Hot Water Test: Place a small piece of silk in a bowl filled with hot water. If it is 100% silk, it will dissolve. This test will not work on blended silk.
  • Chemical Test: Take a small piece of silk and place it on a glass plate. Mix a few drops of iodine with water and place a few drops of iodine on the silk. If the silk is not 100% silk, it will not dissolve. However, this test will not work on blended silk.
